There are many ways that parents and caregivers of children with asthma can help their children manage asthma and decrease symptoms. While asthma can’t be cured, it can be controlled – and understanding asthma is the first step to increasing control.
Group sessions help parents and caregivers improve asthma management through:
- Providing information about what happens in the body during an asthma episode
- Increasing understanding of asthma triggers and trigger reduction
- Recognizing signs and symptoms of asthma episodes
- Sharing concerns about caring for a child with asthma
Free community education groups are held throughout the city, and can be requested by a school, PTA/PTO, community-based organization, employer, place of worship or any group interested in increasing their understanding of how to manage asthma. Sessions can be tailored to group needs.
For child care providers, a separate 3-hour course, Taking Charge of Asthma, has been approved by the Office of Child Care of the Maryland State Department of Education. This course can be scheduled for your child care or Head Start facility at no cost.
