Our community health nurses also provide a range of support services, such as:
- Investigation of each report of a human being who comes into contact with an animal that might be sick or rabid. The nursing program will make referrals, when needed, to obtain rabies prophylaxis. If you are uninsured, a community health nurse will administer rabies vaccine, when needed.
- Birth certificates for home births: a community health nurse will make a home visit to help new mothers obtain a birth certificate after a home birth. The nurse will guide the new mother through the paperwork maze each step of the way.
- Community health nursing provides in-home seasonal vaccines to housebound senior citizens in cooperation with the health department’s immunization program.
Under a grant from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, FHS coordinates medical transportation for Baltimore City residents who participate in the Maryland Medicaid program. Please see our transportation page for information about how to enroll in the Medicaid Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Program.
As part of the Medicaid Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Program, FHS reviews and authorizes payment for air medical transports for all Maryland residents. If you are an air medical provider, please check our “resources” list for helpful downloads.
