The Baltimore City Health Department is conducting a Community Health Survey!
The Health Department's Office of Epidemiology and Planning is conducting a survey of Baltimore City residents to gather information on a variety of health topics. In case you receive inquiries from community members about the survey, here is a bit of background...
The goals of the Community Health Survey are to:
1. Assess the health needs of Baltimore City residents
2. Assess the use and perceptions of city health services
3. Identify gaps in access to health services
4. Assess attitudes related to current programmatic and policy issues
The results of the survey will be used to inform Health Department program planning and policy development.
The survey will interview adults only (ages 18+ years), will take about 20 minutes and will be administered by both landline telephone and cell phone. Interviews began in the first week of April and are expected to continue for about 2 months.

Southwest Baltimore Healthy Homes & Communities Initiative Kick-Off Event

The Baltimore City Health Department is partnering with local community organizations to launch the Healthy Homes and Communities Initiative, an EPA- funded program to address environmental health in Southwest Baltimore.
The goals of this program are to: 1) work with SW Baltimore residents, businesses, government agencies, and community organizations to identify and prioritize home and community-based environmental health hazard reduction strategy and; 2) create an action plan and obtain funding to implement the action plan.
Neighborhoods in SW Baltimore include: Barre Circle, Carrollton Ridge, Hollins Market, Mill Hill, Morrell Park, New Southwest/Mt. Clare, Ridgeley's Delight, Sharp Leadenhall, SBIC, Stadium Area, Union Square & Washington Village/Pigtown. This program could have an impact for many years in the future, and having partnerships develop now is critical. Thank you for your attention, and we hope to see you there!

Bring Your Child to Work Day

What's Going On?
City employees and their school-aged children (5-15 years of age) are invited to join us for breakfast, including mini muffins, bagels and fruit juices, in the Rotunda of City Hall on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 8:30 am. In addition to spending the day with mom or dad, children will have the opportunity to learn about City government and witness first-hand the vital public services provided to the citizens of Baltimore each day.
Activities
After the children have had a chance to meet Mayor Sheila Dixon, they will have the opportunity to be photographed with the Mayor as well as listen to her speak about her story and the City of Baltimore. The children will also be given a history and overview of City Hall.

Dr. Storey has over 30 years of work in communication, health and education, much of it in international settings. He has lived and worked in more than 20 countries. He is currently studying health competence as a conceptual framework for generating and interpreting messages, cultural factors affecting the use and impact of communication in environmental and health promotion programs, mass communication and public discourse about social change, and community-based strategies for behavior change communication.

Leg Squeezes: Sit up straight in your chair, with both feet on the floor. Place a firm water bottle between your knees. Squeeze in on the bottle, release halfway, and then squeeze again. Repeat 16 times. You should feel this exercise in your inner thighs.
